Occupation Based Practice
Second semester, students were given assignments to
continue to grow and understand the analytical perspective of treatment and the
activity performance tasks involved. Case studies were given to analyze and
reflect using clinical reasoning to develop problem statements, goals,
objectives, and activities to present to the community. After researching the patient’s
diagnosis of 18q deletion syndrome, my group and I collaborated to discuss
problem areas and a plan of action. This allowed students to understand the importance
of working together to develop the most appropriate intervention for the
client. Models of practice, frames of reference, evidence based practice
articles and theories assisted to develop appropriate goals and activities in
connection with our case study. Knowledge from first semester correlated with
the pediatric didactic coursework and was utilized as a foundation to build upon.
This case study allowed me to think like an occupational therapist to provide
meaningful activities to motivate the patient to participate in therapy.
Evidence was gathered supporting interventions and was challenging to pick a part the activities and incorporate appropriate interests in relation to her chronological age rather than the cognitive level of function. Feedback provided throughout the presentation opened my mind to various interventions and improvement of the activities presented. I am confident I will improve my clinical reasoning as semesters progress and further understand appropriate occupational therapy treatment plans. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment as well as the feedback, knowing I will grow from this experience and perfect my future assignments.
