Final Reflection
Occupation Based Performance
My
professional portfolio demonstrates growth and understanding of occupation
based performance throughout my educational experience at Touro University
Nevada. Each artifact represents a piece of my journey which has enriched my
development in becoming an occupational therapist. First semester was the
beginning of my educational journey as I was granted the opportunity to become
familiar with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework and incorporate
didactic material toward a practical scenario. The occupational profile,
analysis and intervention plan utilized concepts to build a foundation consumed
with analytical qualities. The occupation of choice was simplistically
broken down into activity and task segments to ensure competency in understanding
the activity analysis. Although this assignment provided me the tools to
analyze activity performance, I still portrayed thoughts of disconnect in relation
to the importance of coursework assignments. As the semesters progressed, I
continued to utilize occupation based performance through projects,
presentations, and fieldwork experiences to enhance my understanding of the
analytical framework in which encompasses occupation.
Third semester, I developed an innovative assistive device based on a particular client diagnosed with breast cancer. I explored the anatomical limitations in which inhibited occupational performance and developed Extend Your Curl. This provided me the opportunity to explore marketed products and develop a cheaper product to meet financial obligations. I feel that as a future practitioner, this experience provided me the opportunity to explore materials, technology and provide cheaper alternatives to meet financial obligations. This allowed me to consistently understand that anything is possible and can be accomplished with simplistic adaptations that could change an individual’s well-being.
As my journey continued into fifth semester, I developed a greater appreciation toward the significance of analyzing occupations, incorporating this aspect into interventions during my first level II fieldwork. This combined course material and practical knowledge toward a applied setting, which allowed me to develop an analytical perspective based on the client’s limitations to understand the root of the problem. I feel that I have a greater appreciation for the assignments completed throughout my coursework at Touro University Nevada because of the pieces interrelated building upon one another as my education matured. I am able to analyze one’s performance and provide a concrete response to validate my reasoning during interventions to explain applicable information. I feel that through analyzing the activity as well as the performance provides concrete details in adapting or modifying the occupation to reach the highest level of success for the client. I am able to apply relevant content learned throughout my coursework to enhance an individual’s occupational performance and continue to explore various methods of modifications that will increase overall independence.
